6 Tips for Managing Bad Breath

Nobody wants bad breath! It’s one thing to have it after eating certain foods like onion and garlic, but what if you have bad breath no matter what you eat? Chronic bad breath is usually a symptom of a larger problem, such as gum disease and tooth decay, since bacteria buildup is the main reason why you may experience bad breath persistently. Here are some ways to manage your bad breath until you are able to come visit us.

  1. Brush & Floss Daily
  2. Because bacteria causes bad breath, proper brushing of your teeth and tongue and diligent flossing is the best way to curb and prevent that foul smell. Doing so every day can also protect yourself from developing gingivitis or tooth decay in the future, too!

  3. Chew Sugar-Free Gum
  4. Chewing sugar-free gum with xylitol is a great way to freshen your breath without having to worry about developing cavities because of added sugar. Xylitol is known for preventing tooth decay, so look for an American Dental Association seal on the pack of your favorite sugar-free gum brand to make sure it’s good for your teeth!

  5. Use Mint Leaves
  6. Chewing on mint leaves or drinking mint tea is another great way to manage bad breath. Fun fact: mint is also good for settling upset stomachs!

  7. Gargle
  8. Gargle with your favorite mouthwash or with warm salt water a few times a week to kill any additional bacteria lingering on the back of your tongue or in your throat.

  9. Monitor Your Diet
  10. Diets high in sugar and acid make it easier for bacteria to multiply in your mouth. Stay away from sticky sweets and opt for healthier choices instead, like dairy, leafy greens, fresh fruits and vegetables, and plenty of water.

  11. Quit Smoking
  12. Smoking is dangerous for your oral and overall health, and will give you bad breath because it allows bad breath bacteria to grow at a more rapid rate. It may not be easy to quit smoking, but doing so will vastly improve your quality of life.
